A fence can be constructed of many things rock, wood, metal, or that terrible barbed wire. We travel down the roads whizzing by one fence after another barley giving heed. When we do notice, sometimes we might ponder what’s behind all those fences.
What are folks keeping in, or what are they trying to keep out? Are they good people or bad, are they rich or poor? Are they people of faith or have some other form of beliefs? The truth is, we don’t know who the folks are behind the fences, only the fence hints to what or who they might be.
Many are asking in today’s clement, why are fences so necessary at all? They question if we’re trying to keep the world out or are, we simply building walls to preserve what’s ours.
Around where I live land is all important and we protect what is ours, we rule over the lands we own, even if it’s just a quarter acre. We place all our hopes and dreams within the boundaries of fences. We become defensive if they are threatened in any way. We may even be prepared to give our lives for what’s inside our fences.
They say fences make good neighbors, so honoring your neighbor’s boundaries are basic instructions and we take the Bible serious. Here’s a question, do you look at your neighbors fences differently than you look at your own? Is their stuff just as important to you as your own stuff in every way. Would your neighbor feel just as violated as you would when someone takes something or trespasses their boundaries.
Another question for you to ponder, do you ever consider God’s fences? Do you realize God has boundaries that aren’t to be defiled? Did you ever take into account how God feels when we encroach upon His wall set for the entire humanity? His commandments are the hedge that sets our limits. His laws show us our bounds. His promises teach us, there are no limits to his love and his protection, keeping us safe. Jesus sacrificed himself for all that is within his domain, all that he could survey, and all that is within his boundaries. Don’t we owe it to the Messiah to stay within the spiritual boundries built for us?
